Talkspace publishes a fixed price per plan. BetterHelp shows your exact weekly price only after its questionnaire, so treat its range as an expectation, not a quote.
Insurance is where they really differ
Talkspace has built its model around insurance. It names Medicare and TRICARE alongside Aetna, Cigna, Optum, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Carelon and Regence, and messaging therapy itself can be covered.
BetterHelp is newer to insurance. Its insurance page lists 125+ plans, including Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Optum and some Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. But on insurance you get one covered live session a week, and messaging between sessions isn’t included.
Session length
Talkspace’s $99 plan includes live sessions of 30 minutes. That suits some people, especially alongside messaging, but it’s shorter than the 45–50 minutes many expect from therapy. BetterHelp doesn’t publish a fixed session length on its FAQ; check it with your therapist at the first session.
Medication
If there’s a chance you need medication for depression, anxiety or anything else, this decides it: Talkspace offers psychiatry, BetterHelp doesn’t. With BetterHelp you’d need a separate prescriber, which means two providers who may never talk to each other.
What they share
- Licensed therapists only, matched after a questionnaire
- Messaging plus live sessions on the self-pay plans
- Cancel any time; Talkspace also lets self-pay members pause for up to seven days
- Neither is a crisis service. In the US, call or text 988.
My verdict
For most people the deciding factor isn’t quality, it’s how you’re paying and whether you might need medication. Insurance or medication points to Talkspace. Paying yourself and wanting a therapist you can message any day points to BetterHelp. If neither fits, Online-Therapy.com is worth a look for structured CBT.
Common questions
Is BetterHelp or Talkspace cheaper?
Without insurance they overlap: BetterHelp is $70–$100 a week, Talkspace $69–$109. With insurance, Talkspace’s published average copay ($10) is lower than BetterHelp’s “as low as $15”, but your own plan decides.
Which is better for anxiety?
Both match you with licensed therapists who treat anxiety. If your anxiety may need medication, Talkspace can add psychiatry. If you want structured CBT exercises, also look at Online-Therapy.com.
Can I use insurance on both?
Yes, with limits. Talkspace is in-network with most major plans including Medicare and TRICARE. BetterHelp is in-network with 125+ plans, but insured members get one live session a week and no messaging.
