How insurance changes the maths
If a platform is in-network with your plan, you usually pay a copay per session instead of the subscription. Two catches:
- Deductibles come first. Until you’ve met your deductible, you may pay the full negotiated rate.
- You may get less. On BetterHelp, insurance covers one live session a week and doesn’t include messaging. Talkspace says messaging therapy can be covered.

Online vs in-person
The platforms’ own comparisons put a typical in-person session at $100–$350 (BetterHelp) or $175–$500 (Talkspace) without insurance. Weekly in-person therapy at those prices is $400 to $2,000 a month, which is why subscriptions look cheap by comparison. The trade-off is that subscription live sessions can be shorter: Talkspace’s $99 plan uses 30-minute sessions.
Five ways to pay less
- Check your Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Many employers offer a few free counselling sessions a year.
- Use HSA or FSA money. BetterHelp and Talkspace both accept it, which effectively takes your tax rate off the price.
- Ask about financial aid. BetterHelp says lower prices may be available through financial aid.
- Pay for longer periods. Talkspace says quarterly or twice-yearly billing usually saves 10–20%.
- Choose the plan you’ll use. If you mostly want to talk once a week, a messaging-heavy plan may be money you don’t need to spend, and the reverse is true too.
Before you pay
Write down three numbers: your weekly price, your billing interval and the date of your first renewal. Put the renewal date in your calendar. It’s the simplest way to avoid paying for a month you didn’t mean to.
