Does BetterHelp Take Insurance? (Checked October 2026)

Yes, for many plans now, but with real limits. Which insurers BetterHelp lists, what an insured plan includes and leaves out, why its own pages disagree, and how to check your coverage in five minutes.

Short answer: yes, for a growing list of plans, but the insured version of BetterHelp includes less than the paid subscription. Here is exactly what I found on BetterHelp’s own pages on October 27, 2026.

Which insurers BetterHelp lists

BetterHelp’s insurance page says it is in-network with 125+ health plans and names these carriers:

  • Aetna
  • Anthem
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield (select plans)
  • CareFirst
  • Cigna
  • Curative
  • Highmark
  • Optum
  • UnitedHealthcare

It adds that coverage “may vary by state, plan, provider network, therapist availability, and deductible status.” In other words, a carrier being on the list doesn’t guarantee your plan is covered, or that an in-network therapist has space in your state.

What insurance gets you, and what it doesn’t

| | With insurance | Subscription (self-pay) | |---|---|---| | Cost | Your copay (BetterHelp: as low as $15, some $0) | $70–$100 per week | | Live sessions | One covered session per week | Included | | Messaging between sessions | Not included | Included | | Live chat sessions, groups, some tools | May be limited or unavailable | Included |

Why BetterHelp’s pages disagree

On the day I checked, BetterHelp’s FAQ still said: “We are working with select insurance carriers to join their network.” Its insurance page said it is in-network with 125+ plans. Both were live at the same time.

The insurance page is more specific and clearly newer, so it’s the one to trust. But it explains why so many older articles (and AI answers) still say BetterHelp doesn’t take insurance.

How to check your own coverage

  1. Find your mental health benefits. Your insurer’s member portal or the number on your card will tell you your outpatient mental health copay and whether you’ve met your deductible.
  2. Start BetterHelp’s questionnaire. BetterHelp says that if insurance is available for you, you’ll be asked for your insurance details and shown estimated costs.
  3. Ask one question before booking: “Is this therapist in-network with my plan?” Out-of-network therapists won’t be billed at your copay.
  4. Check after the first claim. Your insurer’s explanation of benefits shows what was actually billed and what you owe.

If BetterHelp doesn’t cover you

  • Talkspace is in-network with most major plans and says that includes Medicare and TRICARE. See my Talkspace review.
  • Self-pay BetterHelp is $70–$100 a week, and you can usually pay with HSA or FSA funds.
  • Your employer may offer free sessions through an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Ask HR; many people never use it.

Still deciding between the two big names? BetterHelp vs Talkspace lays them side by side.
